About

Q reading

Core Bioinformatics is a specialised team at the Quadram Institute Bioscience providing institute-wide infrastructure, pipelines, and bespoke methods for microbial genomics and metagenomics.

What we do

We support QIB research groups across the full data lifecycle — from raw sequencing data to biological insight.

  • Data infrastructure — reproducible NGS archival via an IRIDA-based system, ensuring traceability of sequencing outputs across the institute
  • Compute platforms — a local Galaxy instance with custom tools, and a private OpenNebula cloud for scalable, containerised workflows
  • Methods development — bespoke bioinformatics tools and pipelines for microbial genomics, metagenomics, and comparative genomics
  • Collaborative support — embedded partnerships with research groups on experimental design, analysis, and pipeline integration

Open science

We release our tools and pipelines openly, packaging them for easy installation through community channels such as Bioconda and the Galaxy Toolshed, so the wider research community can benefit from and build on our work.
